from talking to my friends and reading posts on facebook it pretty jacked up. its really mostly on the shore (coast/beach) area because of the flooding and loss of power.

My heart goes out to all those affected by Sandy. I'm afraid it's probably gonna get worse before it gets better. Not a political statement just from numerous encounters with hurricanes here in the south, it takes time to get that much electricity back on line and clean up the devastation.
Sooner or later the gas runs out plus so many gas stations don't have power to pump the gas they have. Unless your'e like Paul who stores enough gas in his garage to blow up half the neighborhood, eventually you can't get gas to run your generator.
P.S. That's why I switched to a natural gas powered generator. Just as long as the gas grid holds out.

HEY Its only 1/4 of the neighborhood
And you'd be surprised how fast 60 gallons of gasoline disappears. As a former boy scout, I do store it in an aspirated shed, near the neighbors garage apartment I wish wasn't there.

yeah they are already going through a mess now. gas stations close to the beach are out of electric and flooded with water. so they are driving to rest stations and waiting in line for 4-5 hours. some are driving up state NY or to west NJ.

Feel bad for all those people affected by this monster storm. We were fairing pretty well, til I had a problem with the generator last night. My basement was filling up with water quickly (spring under the basement) I must have carried 50 buckets of water out the bulkhead steps bailing out while fixing the generator. Got it going again, then the power came back on an hour later, Thank God! All the const. equipment and tricks sure do come in handy. Pre filled all the water bottles, buckets, the bucket warmer worked great for boiling water and heating up some wash water. Living in the mountains has taught me to be prepared, power goes out often here in the winter, and doesn't come back on too soon either, not uncommon to go with out power for days. This storm has taught me to be even more prepared in the future. Praying for all the poor folks without tonight!

Why are Atlantic City casinos opening, and the gas terminals are still out :
AS of this morning 60% of gas stations on LI,NY were out of gas.

It is more than just the shore towns. Yes they got the brunt of it but Central Jersey was hit hard also. My sister in Central Jersey is still without power and cell phone service. My brother just got his power turned on an hour ago. I have many friends who have lost everything but luckily they are all alive. I will be be going home to Jersey for Thanksgiving and thankfully all of my family members still have their homes and health. Jersey Strong!

Its ugly here on Long Island. The north shore where I am is dealing with a lot of downed trees, which means downed power lines also. I just got my power back last night, but I think that's because I live reasonably close to a power station. (1.5 miles away) There's plenty here who wont see power for at least a few more days.
The south shore is just a wreck. Homes completely destroyed, those still on their foundations are flooded. Even more trees are uprooted because the ground was saturated. I just got a picture from a customer... I built a deck on the back of their house a few years ago which was about 5' off the ground. The sludge line on the the house is about 2' higher than the deck. Can you imagine your backyard as deep as a swimming pool? Oh, his neighbor had two boats show up in his driveway. They were on rack in storage, but as the water levels rose, they just floated out of the marina. Seems that happened a lot down there.
I lost a large maple which landed on the neighbors garage, and my cheap metal shed wound up in the other neighbors backyard. Glad that thing went, I always hated it. Started framing a new wood shed today.

We have clear, sunny 80 degree weather here and it is painful to watch the suffering in the East. Lots of groups here have organized food and bottled water collections and full trucks are heading out tonight to help. I just cannot comprehend how the distribution of these types of support are organized and executed. It seems overwhelming.
