Tile discussion

Is it "OK" to have 2 different ceramic tiles throughout the house? I want to put a different tile in our office & my husband thinks we should put the same tile throughout the house. Our house is a small single story ranch. There is a bathroom seperating the kitchen & office. Please I need advice on this ASAP. Thanks in advance.

it's your house....fight over it! hehe

I'm a one color type of person myself. I so hate it seeing a foyer ran one color and size to another room and a different tile color and size ran off or into it.
you could use a accent border.
people do change carpet colors and paint colors from room to room though

Hi Stella, welcome.

I like having one tile through out the house if possible. If you are going to have a second tile, it looks better to have the two areas separated with a room of hardwood or carpet. But, there are no rules, I have seen two different tiles meet at a doorway many times.

Just as common to have different carpet in different areas of a house. It's a matter of preference and design. There aren't too many rules restricting what you choose except those you impose upon yourself.
Best of luck,
Shaughnn

You are both right. It's a matter of taste and preference. A transition between the two tiles types will help if you decide to go that rout.

my house was about 40/60 tile/carpet when we bought. Nice tile, but impossible to match, we found. So we had no choice about mixing. We did use a 4" marble listelle between tiles, and made the transitions at areas like doorways where it's a natural break. We think it works, and so does everyone who's seen it.

Stella, Stella, Stella!!!! While there is no right or wrong answer to than question, I gotta tell ya, I once did a job in a multi-million dollar house in the desert of North Scottsdale, AZ, and the gentleman I was working for used the same tile (6", 12" and 18")throughout the entire house and believe me, it was a lot of tile. My personal feeling was, where's the personality in using the same thing in every room? I'm all about themes and doing things outside the box. Take the response however you wish to take it and good luck with your decision.

Different colors in different rooms, no problems here, I am always installing different colors in the same room. Usually dark on floor and light on walls.
