I imagine they'd have done quite a bit better than that.

I saw a new "waterproofing method" a few weeks ago. I was called in to give my opinion as to whether or not the shower would leak. Probably good they did it at this point, since there was no tile installed yet. Sorry, I didn't take any pictures, I was too busy scratching my head as I did the demo.

The installer started with a concrete curb and pre-slope, which was good, but then he used 6" wide galvanized roof flashing bent into the corners and at the wall-floor junction, over the pre-slope. Then he covered the slope and flashing with one coat of Redgard, slopped over the clamping drain and weep holes, no tie-in to the drain, and nothing at the wall protrusions, a couple of which were body sprays at the 3' level.

Next was 1/2" Durock on the walls installed with sheetrock screws, many of which were sticking up 1/8", and probably a half-dozen tubes of white latex caulking on the seams, followed by another coat of Redgard on the walls. Another sloped bed of mud was put in with the required birdbaths and backslopes. For some reason he also put Durock over the concrete curb with concrete nails. Still haven't figured that one out yet.

The bench wasn't installed yet, and there was no discussion of recessed soap boxes, and there was no waterproofing around the 2'x2' window. I also found a few pieces of scrap Durock in the final mud bed, guess he was trying to save a few pennies. All this on a $500,000 home.

Total cost: $2,100.00, and not a single tile had been installed yet. Installer said he had done a bunch of them that way on some high-end houses. I don't even know how he could get the tile to lay flat with all the excess caulking globbed up over the seams.

All of it in a dumpster now.

Absolutely amazing that people actually do this $hit. I suppose they just figgure that ...."Well, seems logical to me..." without any training or schooling in the proper way to waterproof something.

I shake my head in wonderment and pity the poor homeowner, but, I'm happy that this keeps me in business.......

Not really a "worst job" but interesting anyway...

Was looking at a bath redo, went into basement to get an idea on plumbing location and spied this wonderful specimen. I think the folks thought it was weird that I wanted photos...

I'm a DIYer, but I do my research before I start. Some of the people I know don't seem to bother.

Yes, that is DITRA used in a shower, and yes, he doesn't seem to have checked the boxes for variance in the colors of travertine before he started sticking them to the wall.

No word on whether or not he keyed in the divots or if he used modified or unmodified.
