You know. It's a shame that you guys are right. People just don't want to pay or hear the sales pitch. Yet all they have to do is hit the internet and read for a bit to understand the basics of any home improvement project. This site for example!

Mike Holmes does a great job of slamming scumbag contractors but fails to point the finger at the major cause of the issues on his shows. It's probably not his fault..it would'nt make for good TV if he did. I will bet that a good chunk, 50% of homeowners or more failed to perform due diligence in hiring a contractor. If you're gonna drop 100k on an addition, you owe it to yourself to spend some serious time learning about how it's done. Talk to local inspectors, browse the internet, attend trade shows etc.

I like Mike Holmes but...downside is people watch the show and want his kind of work in my generation but, I am noticing they don't want to pay the higher prices. You think when Mike Holmes bid jobs hes cheap, he's probably the most expensive guy.

Ray,

I know a guy thinks he can do everything, he was trying to tell me how grouts waterproof and when water goes through it it evaporates, I told him to lay off the pipe. He also told me green boards allowed in showers, I just shrug my shoulders.

Unfortunately Rick around here it is. I sure wouldn't use it, and it doesn't conform to industry standards, but it will pas an inspection. A lot of the problem with hacks is the building laws and enforcement of licensing. For example I had my G.C. license in Oregon, and that was a way bigger deal than it is here. It is a state license and strictly enforced, everybody had to be licensed insured and bonded. When I lived there I never had to fight with hacks and illegals for bids.

Here in Colorado is is strictly up to individual cities, and most don't require anything. I live in a city where in city limits you have to have a license but it isn't enforced. I have my G.C. license here and the test wasn't very hard at all compared to Oregon, the hardest part of getting licensed here is the financials.

Waterproof grout.... I bet he thinks that greenboard is waterproof to. Laws are definitely different all over the place. Not just state to state but even on a city level. Anybody thinking greenboard is ok for a shower area is a moron though. Thats goes for installers and inspectors.

Here in Massachusetts, the law states "smooth, non-corrosive, and non-absorbent, waterproof materials to a height not less than six feet above the floor level. Such walls shall form a watertight joint with each other and with the bathing tub, floor receptor, shower floor or base." I guarantee that if you asked most installers what the law states, they would have no idea. They probably dont even know there are laws on it. As sad as it is to say but I know for a fact that we have all seen our share or horrible work. Hence this forum. Maybe some day people will wake up.

Or perhaps those persons are simply ignorant.

Let's do try to avoid name-calling, even in the hypothetical, shall we?

And if your "law" does, in fact, state exactly what you've quoted, I can certainly see why on one would make any real effort to remember it.

So many holes in that it would certainly not qualify even as challenge-resistant.

The wall may have been damaged from the other side. I used to maintain a nightclub where all manner of odd things were found the next morning. When we tiled the bathrooms we added 3/4" ply under the drywall to prevent damage. Worked quite nicely.
