What We Do for Our Pets

There is no doubt this is an animal loving forum. So, just what do you do for your pet that is special????

Shaka (our Black Labbie) is now 11 yrs old, has had an artificial hip since age 2 and arthritis has invaded. Two years ago we used to do three mile walks together, now she can barely make it across the meadow. Her spirit is willing, but her body protests. So........we searched a couple months for the answer to her dilemma and came up with this, after some modifications. She goes nuts when she knows she gets to go in her "chariot". And yes, we go out in public.

We have a 7-8 month old black lab pup, and if he eats my remote control or doesn't become the bird 'dawg' I'm training him to be, I'll put him down and get another. I'm still working on the angel/compassion thing, it's gettin' better.

Of course, my wife has threatened to put me down a time or two also, and I have yet to wake up dead.

Good looking 'dawg', it's hard to see good ones get old. I've had 7 of 'em, and it never gets easier.

The last pup I had was taken into 'the depot' too young and I turned my back to him for a second and he dropped a present right in the middle of the hardware aisle. Quick as a flash I grabbed a little plastic hardware baggie and used the glove-inside-out-technique. I toted the little baggie, along with my material to the check-out and the checker-girl asked what that was . . . I said "just trash and crap" she then told me I couldn't take the bag out of the store. I pleaded against it, but she hasseled me long enough to hand over the baggie, which she promptly dropped in the waste-can under her register. I wish I could have been there when she opened the bag searching for 'that smell'.
The new pup (Levi) is watched like a hawk in the orange box store.

I've had 7 of 'em, and it never gets easier.

Shaka goes to work with dave everyday so she is a 24/7 pet. Dave and I have said to one another that 10+ years of devoted pet companionship just doesn't make that one last day worth it sometimes. Heartbreaking. Hope your wife keeps that in mind about you.

And Mark, Shaka rides in the cart at HD (with a blankie underneath). We get ragged on by the staff if she isn't with us. The checkout folks keep milkbones for her. And when asked where we got her, "Aisle 16, Special Closeout".

Eric, your pup going to be OK? Vets have come a LONG way with that surgery in the last 5+ years.

Hes 9 years old with the heart of a pup..Hope to have him out hunting grouse this fall..The nose still works...Might get him a patch and a ear ring!

Don't know if you could exactly call it "special", but our Peke whom we rescued from the pound is definitely top dog. Pekes are anatomically incorrect no matter which part you are referring to, and neither one of his rear kneecaps stay put for long. As a result he gets to spend most of his time bein' carted here and there, or layin' around showin' off the goods. We are definitely servants to the King, willing ones I might add - we love our dogs, they're the best!

Hi Marge. I love this thread. I have a 13 year old blue heeler (aka australian cattle dog). Her name is Bonnie. We got her when my daughter was 2 and now she's getting ready to drive (my daughter, not the dog). Bonnie has a little bit of arthritis so she gets an aspirin every day in her dog food. She also had to battle heart worms a couple of years ago and we almost lost her. She gets to come in and stay in her crate during the day if it gets over 95 degrees and she comes in at night if it gets below about 40. She also loves to fetch the ball so now I only throw it about 10 ft. She still loves to play. I'll try to put up some pictures later.

These are our two boys. The brown one is a MinPin - he's a rescue and that is why he has a tail and ears. Looking at how cute that is, don't y'all think it is a pity that they dock the tails and ears on the mini Pinschers?!

The black & white one is a Rat Terrier. This picture is from when he was very little - about 5 years ago. His legs stopped growing, but his body not, so he looks like a cross between a Gateway PC box and a doorstop.

Since I don't know how to post a pix of my Beautiful Baghira, I wil just tell you she and the "dropoff" aka Cally, aka, no-body wanted me... are queens of our house. The Bernese was bought in Switz, and it was Kermit's idea, but the amount of money I have had to spend on her is incredible, i.e, she has allergies, eats special foods, has a $l00 bath tub,cause I cannot bend over, etc. She also has $l00's of holistic meds around here, been to all kinds of classes, even hit the show circuit when a pup.She has every kind of collar and leash known to man,Kermit does not open his mouth either. I also have my dad's blind and deaf l3 yo yellow lab here, and he is happy as a lark. He brings me his ball l,000 times a day and will eventually find it and bring it back, time after time after time. Cally was left at our farm with her food and bowl one Easter Sunday morning. She is a Wirehaired Terrier cross and has her own personality. We love them all. The Bernese loves to travel and goes with us when she can. We also have one cat who we live with........... piggy

Pets? hah, you mean my children.

I have two - smiley over there to the left is Dante and he has a sister...she smiles too!! It's hard to not crack up when you walk in the door and those two are sitting there showing of their pearly whites

Spoiled doesn't begin to describe my dogs lives. In fact, I've had friends dogs stay at my house and refuse to go home. We now call it the Dog Hospitality Center. These guys get round about a two hour walk every day and sometimes two a day on the weekends. They get this amazing food called Merricks...looks better than my moms chicken soup! I spend a small fortune and drive all over town to get the "special" cookies that the primadonna's request. Basically my life happily and much more fully evolves around them. But they handle it well.

I could go on and on and on.....
