Can anyone recommend a paint for inside a firebox and where to get it.

I believe Krylon makes some high temperature paint, but I don't know how well it would stick to masonry or stone work.

I have seen painters use a black paint on the inside of fireboxes, it was a brush on type.

Caulk or Grout

I have redone my fireplace and hearth with tile surrounded by oak. Where the tiles meet the wood, should I caulk or grout the 1/8" joint? I would prefer grout, but I am wondering if it will crack.

It will crack. The wood will expand and contract due to seasonal changed in temperature and humidity, and will do so even more in proximity to the fireplace heat. Caulk that joint.

For future reference, always caulk where tile butts up to anything that's not tile.

Grout would look better than caulk, but will crack. There is another way. Use a narrow piece of 1/4 round trim of the same type wood as your mantle that will just cover the gap in question. Stain and finsh to match. If you stain and finish your cut pieces of trim before applying them you could get away with tacking them on with a headless pin nailer. Or if you are really careful you can use contact cement to attach the lightwieght trim. Apply cement to the wood surfaces and let dry. Carefully line up trim and press on firmly. You get one shot at this method. Good luck. Don
