remove oil paint from grout and slate

arial
I spilled some oil paint on my slate and grout several year ago. Although I thought I cleaned it well, now there are mottled discolored stains which I would love to remove. I have tried scrubbing with a Purple stuff cleaner and a wire brush with very little improvement. Any advice?

Try a water test first. with a damp sponge; moisten the area where the spill occured. If the stained area repells water and remains lighter in color than the unstained areas, then you still have residue that may be abraded from the stone with a wet green dish scrub pad or use methylene chloride (paint stripper).

For grout oil stain removal: try making a poultice with baking soda and acetone or lacquer thinner made into a paste. Apply the paste to grout 1/4" thick and overlap 1-2" covering tight with plastic wrap, taping edges down. This allows the acetone to evaporate slowly pulling the oil from the grout or stone. Remove plastic when dry (24-48 hrs) reapply until the stain is gone or no noticable difference is seen.
