Thinset coverage less than what the bag says

Working on my kitchen floor, I'm using a half-inch by half-inch notch trowel.
The instructions on the bag of thinset (Laticrete Gold) say I should expect about 60 sq ft coverage, but I'm only getting about 30-35 sq ft per bag.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this just the way it is?

Thank you

Hi Woody,

Are you sure it says that on the bag? The ~30-35 sq ft per bag is what I would expect for 1/2 x 1/2 trowel, ~60 sq ft for a 1/4 x 1/4.

I think you are reading the coverage for 1/4 x 3/8.

Woody, like the others have suggested, something is wrong on the bag or how you are reading it. Here's a direct quote from the Laticrete 253 Gold data sheet: http://www.laticrete.com/Portals/0/d...ts/lds2960.pdf
Quote:
Coverage
  • Approximately 80–95 ft2 / 50 lb bag (7.4–8.8 m2/ 22.7 kg bag) with 1/4" x 1/4" (6 mm x 6 mm) notched trowel.
  • Approximately 60–70 ft2 / 50 lb bag (5.6–6.5 m2/ 22.7 kg bag) with 1/4" x 3/8" (6 mm x 9 mm) notched trowel.
Coverage will vary depending on trowel notch size, type and size of tile and substrate.
