Center the tile to the area or center to the room

I'm tiling a bathroom that is 2 rooms; one room for the vanity and tub and a room with a door for the toilet. The dimensions for areas to be tiled in these rooms are: 1). room with vanity and shower 76 1/2"( to the center of the doorway to the toilet room to the tub) x 40 1/4". 2). Toilet room 38" x 59".

If you are looking into the room the tub is to your right, the vanity straight ahead and the toilet room to your left. Other info: 1 tile + 1 grout line is 11 29/32", grout lines are 1/8th in. see attached diagram.
Im wondering for layout:
1. Should I have full tiles run along the tub? If I do I will have a 5 " tile along the wall in the toilet room. When you are looking into the room you will see the tub long before you see the wall in the toilet room.

2. Or is it OK to put cut tiles along the tub?

3. OR Should I look at each of those 2 rooms as separate rooms; have a full tile on each side of the center line of the toilet room doorway. If I do this the btub/vanity room area is 76.5" and this layout would put cut tiles at the tub again of about 5 "

Thanks, Pat

Glad to hear someone else thinking like this. I just went through this. My tiles were cut along the tub even though there is a beautiful square edge there, just to center the tiles in the doorway of my small bath. Apparently, this is a common method, but I think the space should be considered. The other wall is all cabs which would have hidden any cut tiles.

I would put a beautiful full tile along the tub, which is a focal point in any bath. If it is not square though, it could be a problem.

Have you considered putting it on the diagonal?

Tub is square, it just makes it a small tile by the vanity on the side. I may center the tile to each room and say the heck with it.

Hi Pat, I think I'd make it a full tile along the tub and full at the door coming in. Under the vanity you really don't care. In the toilet room is not crucial either.

Thanks Mike, I think the full tile at the tub and door will look better, this makes a 5" tile along the wall in the toilet room which is not in your initial line of sight and who cares about that room as long as it's straight.

Thanks again, Pat

PS, you're up early Mike

He just didnt go to Bed.The Packers won and he's been celebrating......................Of course,THEY CHEATED!!!!

Pat, measure several of those tiles, you may find they vary by 1/32 or more.

Lay out 7 tiles with grout lines of 3/16"(unless this is granite or marble)
measure the distance from 1st tile edge to 7th tile leading edge.
dived by 3 this will give you an average spacing for your grid and make up for variations in tile size.OK ,carry on !!

The layout in a bathroom doesn't have to center on anything unless there is a symmetrical character to the room, as when a tub might be centered between two equal size windows or two angled walls. In that case, the floor should be balanced in that direction. That still doesn't mean you have to have full tiles anywhere at all, only that the cuts should be balanced from side to side.

Most bathrooms are NOT symmetrical. My only concern then is that we don't end up with any unsightly cuts anywhere. Often, we simply lay the floor out in a manner that will economize on tile material.

Todd, I'm sure you're saying this because the Vikings are your team. But this is the part of the season that the Vikes screwed it up last yeat too: after they get beat by the Giants they go mushy. Just as long as it was in time for the Colts to beat them!

Thanks for the measuring advice because I just measured 3 tiles with 2 grout joints. Can I use 1/8", I like that size joint better? As soon as I get off of here I'm going to mearsure 7 tiles

John, I don't think I'll have any unsightly cuts. In the toilet room the tile will be 5" along the far wall and under the vanity they will be 3" along the vanity. that should be OK...I hope. This will economize on materials for sure. thanks

Thanks for all the help guys. Pat

Todd,
This is what I got:
71.5" measured to the leading, divided by 3 gave me 23.8333. When I measured 3 tiles w/2 grout lines I got 23 13/16 = 23.8125, the difference of .0205. Does that make much difference this time?
