Tile Over Plaster in Shower

I am doing charity work on a house for disabled adults that has plaster walls. I need advice for how to handle the shower. The shower is a tub with about 40 inches of surround tile with bull nose on the top row. Sometime in the past they put the old-style Masonite based tile board over the plaster walls using construction adhesive. That swelled up and I need to do something to address this. I have removed the tile board. I was thinking of just adding tile above it, grout it and seal it after making necessary wall preparations. The walls above the tile were painted with an oil-based semi gloss. The construction of the walls looks like a double layer of plaster board or plaster board covered by some type of cement board then the finish plaster coat. No water damage to the walls is apparent. I have attached pics of what it looks like now (hopefully they are attached).

My questions are:
1. Can I just apply tile above the bull nose grout and the seal?
2. If so, what do I have to do prepare the wall correctly? Sand the paint down to the plaster or just rough it up? Any type of primer needed before tiling?
3. What type of adhesive? I was thinking thin set.
4. Where the removal of the tile board pulled off some of the plaster, I’ll mud that over with plaster patch. Where there is a hole in the outer layer of the wall, I was going to cut that out and inlay a patch of cement board with thin set.

If all this is in feasible, then I’ll probably just go back with FRP paneling to replace the old tile board using that recommended adhesive. They just need something to protect the wall above the tile and there is very little money available.

Thanks for any advice!

Hi Mark, welcome. If this is just a temp fix then you can do it the way you said. It won't last forever though.

keep in mind that tiling and sealing the grout does not mean it is waterproof. sealing is only for making it somewhat easier to clean stains.

if you really have no money, you should repair the holes and then buy a bucket of redgard and put a few coats on, then tile as normal. this is NOT an approved practice by the manufacturer but it would only cost like 60 bucks or so and would prevent water from soaking the wall.
