Schluter Schiene Question

Hodwy to All!

I'm using something similar to the Schluter Schiene 3/8" profile product (bought it at Lowes) at a sliding glass door. The instruction video on the Schluter site doesn't say anything about tacking it down before installiation of thinset and tile. Pretty much mud and go---so to speak.
Is there a problem with tacking it down to keep it in place and flush to the door frame and then proceeding as suggested in the instruction video?

Thanks a bunch!

Schiene (or the Lowes knock-off) needs to be fully embedded in mortar. I don't see how that would be possible if you tack it down to the floor before combing out the thin set.

It's really quite easy to work with. If you can lay tile flush to the frame, you can lay Schiene with tile flush to it.

Thanks Mike,

That's what I wanted to know.
Do I leave a small gap between the tile and the Schluter(knock off) for colored caulk or do I put the tile flush to the profile edge of the product.

Sometimes the Schiene that you get from the big boxes is slightly bent. I don't know why, maybe from sitting upright in the display or from shipping or something, but if your piece is bent take it back. Otherwise you should be cool to just install it just like Mike2 said. You are leaving an expansion gap filled with matching caulk next to that sliding glass door, right??

Hi there.
Can I butt in on your thread and ask why you're using the piece at all? We are about to tile our floor, and we were just going to take the tile up to 1/8" from the edge of the sliding door and caulk it. I'm glad I caught your thread so I can educate myself. Again.

Not a problem---Welcome Mary Ann I'm using it for height adjustment. My tile profile at the door frame is too high. The Schulter peice adds a protective edge for the tile instead of the tile edge being totally exposed.

Madison Mike---I was planing on leaving an 1/8" gap between the tile and the Schluter profile. Are you suggesting the gap should be between the Schluter and the door frame?

Right: on the gap between the profile and the door. don't leave the gap between the tile and profile. You will want to fill that joint with grout.

I'll second what Jerry just said adding that real Schiene has a small ridge on the tile side which holds the tile off just the right amount for grout. Snug the tile right up to this "spacer" and you are all set to go. Don't know if this is true with the Lowes brand of profile.

Yeah, the knock off product doesn't have the extra little ridge. I can work it out though.
So, in my case, there'll be a 1/16" gap between the tile and the profile filled with grout and a 1/8" gap between the profile and the door frame filled with color caulk for an expansion joint??
I'm using sanded grout. Should I flip those #'s around?

I sure am glad you folks are here!
