Need recommendation for product to clean slate floor

I bought a house recently, it has about 500sqft of unsealed slate flooring. My friend loaned me a basic Bissell carpet and tile cleaner that I want to try on it. What is a good cleaning product for me to soak the floor in, and what do I put in the machine, if different? I have some pretty heavy grout staining or dirt in the kitchen area, other than that it's pretty standard multi color slate with light grey grout.

Thanks for all advice!

Hi, Ben.

I’m not familiar with that machine, so my advice is going to be generic to cleaning stone.

Normally, you’ll want to use a stone specific, pH neutral cleaner for routine cleaning. But if your stone/grout is fairly soiled, you’ll likely need to up the ante. In that case, you’ll want to wet the tile and grout with a high alkaline cleaner, allow it to dwell (pay attention to the directions, but probabably at least 5 minutes or more), agitate the surface with a nylon bristle brush, then wet vac the dirty mess. Repeat if additional treatments continue to yield additional cleaning. Then rinse and wet vac with water to bring the pH back down to neutral.

Thanks Bubba, do you have any specific products you can recommend? It needs to be something accessible to me, so internet order, amazon, or big box store.

Every, or nearly every place that sells tile will sell a high alkaline cleaner. Many manufacturers will sell it with a name similar to ‘heavy duty tile and grout cleaner’.

If you give us the name of your box store or the name of the manufacturer of the cleaners available to you, we can give you specific cleaner names.
