carrara marble shower

I'm planning a shower project with 3x6 white cararra marble tiles in a subway pattern.

Do you folks normally try to match the end grains/veining in tiles this size? And I know with ceramic, I normally shuffle tiles between boxes to get a good mix. Does that still apply in this case?

Thanks

The best answer - what does Mrs Lou want?

We mix boxes on every job. Cull out the undesirables.

carrara marble shower

you'll never be able to match the grains. if you try you'll go nuts.
you could if you cut them out of a larger 18x18, but you will go nuts doing that too

random looks best.

Thanks guys.

Paul - no Mrs. Lou in this case , I was writing up an estimate for a potential client and didn't know whether to account for the additional hours vein matching would've taken.

Brian - good to hear. I was thinking the same thing, that it would've driven me nuts on tiles that size.

Another couple of questions - partly based on other threads I've read about yellowing/browning of carrara marble in a shower.

I had planned on poly sheeting over the studs, then 1/2" Hardibacker (client already has it on site), white 253 gold, then the tile.

1. Do you think it'd be better to use Kerdi board, so the waterproofing is directly underneath the tiles?

2. What about skim coating the backs of all the tiles with Hydroban?

Thanks

1 & 2 - Neither 1 nor 2 will stop the yellowing of the marble. That happens when moisture is introduced to the tiles over time. Your waterproofing method is good for this install.
