Exclamation Deflection

What can I do to install tile over 1 1/8" plywood which is installed over 4x8 post and beam 4' o.c. According to the TCA manual, 16" centers for single layer plywood is recommended. Can I block it on 24" or 16" o.c. and meet the L/360? Any help is appreciated.

Your post and beam structure meets the L/360 criteria, so all you need to do is install 2x8 joists between the existing ones, making sure that these joists run purpendicular to the grain of the plywood. You may have to add doubled 2x8s as headers to get the directions right, buy "in for a dime, in for a doller," eh?

If you use Ditra as an underlayment (you will need some sort of underlayment for single layer plywood installations), then you need only one need joist (24" spacing), otherfwise, you'll need 2 (16" spacing).

Acceptable Installation

Is there any TCA, ANSI, or other organizations that address in writing modification of 1 1/8" plywood over post and beam 4' oc to allow for an acceptable tile installation?

No one addresses joist spacing beyond 24" oc to my knowledge, L. And I know of no testing done beyond that spec.

My opinion; worth price charged.
