Can Plaster Be Removed from Old Tiles?

Hello All,

A couple of years ago my friend was dismantling a great old bathroom in Hancock Park (large estates) and he called to see if I wanted to try and salvage some of the fixtures and tiles. I went over and was thrilled to see this great 1930s bathroom with sea foam green tub, sink, toilet, and floor to ceiling tiles. The wall beside the tub had an ornate scene with sea gulls and the tiles were in great shape. I was very careful removing the tiles and managed to get many off with no residue at all on the backs;however,I brought home a "truckload" of tiles that have up to 1" of plaster on the back of them!

Is there anything that will remove this, or are these tiles destined for the dumpster?

Hi WM, Welcome!

How big are the tiles? I have literally "sawed" the plaster, mud, and thinset off the backs of tiles when necessary (with a wet saw). Otherwise, we have used cup wheels on grinders, with the tiles in a jig (very dusty and slow).

Hope others chime in on suggestions!
