Tips For Installing Latasil

In our new outdoor kitchen, I tried to put Latasil in 54' of 3/16" expansion joint yesterday. the first section I tried was a disaster. I taped the joint well, applied the silicone and tooled it, and it looked reasonably good. I pulled the tape off as per instructions and tried to retool the joint to get rid of the feathering on the edges from pulling up the tape, that created a total mess. Does anyone have any tips /tricks/hacks ?

It was also a windy day yesterday and there was too much stuff blowing around it the air and landing on the uncured silicone, I at least learned that lesson.

Spray it with denatured alcohol before you retool it.

Keep a bowl of water with a little Dawn dishwashing liquid in it. Dip your finger in it before tooling the silicone.

Keep some paper towels nearby to wipe your finger off after each pass.

The top ten reasons to procrastinate:

Get a spray bottle and mix dawn dish liquid with some water. Get a caulking tooling spatula . Lowes and Home depot carry them. Install the caulking and then spray the soapy solution on the caulk. Use the tool to remove the excess caulk to a perfect bead. Wipe the tool clean with paper towels. Super easy!
