To buy an online vehicle transmission or not?

Tired of transmission rebuilds. Every time I take one in (4x so far on company vans) the answer is always well it will be anywhere from $2500-$4000. They take them apart and when you can no longer drive it they tell you it’s going to be $4,000.

Alternative is to buy from one of the big transmission rebuild online sites which delivers my transmission for about $1600. Find a local reputable transmission installation company who is certified with that mfgr which is was about $750. I understand the gap between installation warranty and the transmission warranty, but has anybody ever done these? Horror stories?

For ref, I’v got a Ford E150 to do.

And to save your time, yes I know the best answer is not to buy anE150 but buy an E350

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing, Kevin. Maybe take a course on how to rebuild them and do it yourself. As much as they charge, you might ditch the tile trade.

I've always driven a 3/4 ton or 1 ton for my work truck. I feel that 1/2 tons are not much more than a car that has a bed. Made for comfort more than anything else. My last two trucks have been 6 speed standard shifts. It's cheaper to change out the clutch than rebuild an automatic trans. I do get tired of shifting though.

I have no idea how good the online trannys are. Might be worth taking the chance.

How many miles are you getting out of the transmissions before they bite the dust?
Are you taking them to the dealer or a trans shop?
