Concrete floor-condo project-shower drain

Got a problem... installing new shower in gutted condo. Condo assoc. won't let us cut into the floor. Contractor wants to drain shower to former tub drain in corner. This will result in about a 5" height in center of shower floor. Add Kerdi drain and slope and we're about 6 1/4" at curb. Got a 7' ceiling and don't want to add a step outside shower. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Scott

you can slope down to a tub drain, and normally without a 5" height-- I'm not understanding, you don't have access to install a two part shower drain? I don't think the kerdi drain will fit if its in the end like that.

Welcome back, Scott.

Like Jason, I don't understand the dilemma. You're not gonna try to use the actual drain that was in the tub, are you?

You'll need to change the drain pipe from the existing 1 1/2" to a 2" pipe and trap at least, and install an appropriate drain for the type of shower pan you intend to use. Condo association doesn't supersede the code requirements, eh?

My opinion; worth price charged.

hey guys...I didn't do a very good job of explaining...I'm a tile pro subbing on this job. The shower has been framed in a different part of the room. The tub drain is outside the framing for the shower. It's about a 4 foot run from the center of the shower to the old drain. The GC's idea is to run 2" pvc from the old drain to the center of the shower with 1/4" per ft. pitch ending in a "street elbow". I would cover the pipe with mud and attach Kerdi drain.

Problem is our finished height at the curb would be more than 6".

Can we move this back to pro hangout?

Thanks,
Scott

You're right, you didn't 'splain it very well, Scott.

I initially moved it here to the Advice board because we get a lot of questions that pertain to home owner association dilemmas in condo remodels and this appeared to by another of those. Keep in mind that it's not who's doing the work or if they're charging money that makes the thread ripe for the Hangout, it's the subject matter. 'Bout half what's posted there should be in the Advice forum.

But you're right, this might get technical and pretty non-standard and we don't want to have the DIYers doing things as wrong as this one is likely to go, eh?

Is your HOA gonna get the plumbing inspector to sign off on that drain with the trap four feet away? He is planning to install a trap, eh?

This won't help much, but I just did some work in a condo complex where we removed an old tub and installed tile showers. There is definitely a very strict rule of conduct in these places. We didn't move the location of the shower as in your situation though.

If cutting the concrete isn't an option, then I don't see another way. The situation isn't ideal, but I don't see another option.

Is this condo unit above another?

I would do as the GC instructed and get his, the condo assn, and the HO approval, as well the inspector.
