Hey quick question. I don’t think I have this right. I thought my existing flange would be high enough to slip the tile under, but it’s just a bit too short. Should I place something under the flange first before setting the tile? What should that be? Or just smoosh thinset mortar in there as I tile? Do I need to screw through the holes in the flange down to the wood subfloor ?

Yeah, Chris, you do want that flange supported. Is there any vertical movement to it? Is the drain line cast iron, PVC/ABS, or copper? Do you have access to it from underneath?

I believe the flange itself is either cast iron or brass and its soldered to copper drain. The drains in this house are all soldered copper.

The flange has no flex to it at all. But I'd still like to place supports underneath and then drill through to screw to subfloor. I don't have any access to it from below.

Yeah, given the copper lines I'd certainly be leery of trying to pry it upwards more than a hair or two.

About all you can do is shim it tight between the bottom of the flange and the installed Ditra. HD, and probably Lowes, have composite shims.

The tiling is finally done. Man hex tiles were such a mistake. This is my first time tiling and it was really really difficult with these big hex tiles. There’s definitely some spots I don’t like. Inconsistent grout joints in spots, some lippage, not the best cuts. But I’m going to live with it.

I am putting in a white grout, Spectralock 1. How much will the grout help make some of these mistakes “disappear” into the field? Also FYI I made up a sample board with the grout to practice, this pre-mixed grout is legit. I don’t know a ton about grouts but it was easy to apply and dried really rock hard.

That's a whole lotta good, if hard, work Chris.

Grout will help disguise some of the spots you are less proud with, and a grout closer to the main color of the tile will disguise them better. How about a light gray?
