Schluter will provide a warranty even if you only OHM the cable before, during, and after installation. But they will extend the warranty if you meg it also.
As far as the rug goes, best to avoid altogether, but the ones with a non-slip rubber type backing are the worst. They say not to place a rug anywhere on the heated floor, I don't recall them singling out the location of the heat sensor, Technically, I don't believe the sensor to be a thermocouple, though I concede the thermostat probably won't operate without the sensor.
