The only way to honor veterans is to stop creating them. American imperialist aggression is causing the death, maiming, and displacement of millions of innocents including members of the American military. You want to honor America's best? Stop sending them off to fight illegal wars. Stop the American Killing Machine. Stop it. Our illegal unprovoked wars on sovereign nations violate our Constitution as well as international law. Our leaders are war criminals and as long as they have the support of the public we are complicit in their crimes.

So that's what we tell the families of the men who died on the USS Arizona and at Pearl Harbor. Bodie, you should be ashamed to have opened your mouth in regards to the topic.

That would be a nice way to honor them, Bodie, but it's certainly not the only way.

Good on Chick-Fil-A. I'm sure their gesture touched a lot of folks.
I wouldn't mind if we had a few more businesses like them.

Greg, I'd tell the families of those killed at Pearl that I equate the current imperialist American government to the Japanese imperial government that launched the Dec 7 unprovoked attacks on a sovereign nation. And I'd ask those families that to honor their dead they demand their government stop launching illegal wars on sovereign nations that kill, maim and displace millions of innocents.

Im sure a sincere and heartfelt "sorry for you loss, your loved one gave the ultimate sacrifice to defend my rights and the others of this country, thank you" would be better received.

Greg, struggling with the sudden and tragic loss of a loved one is a deeply personal experience, and offering heartfelt condolences and support is what decent humans do for each other. I find it self indulgent, shallow and inappropriate however to offer "thanks" to relatives of someone killed regardless of the circumstances. Offering your "heartfelt gratitude" may make you feel better, and perhaps make it easier for you to rationalize the death, but I doubt the surviving loved ones will find it useful in their grieving.
During my lifetime, many Americans have shed blood on foreign soil through acts of US aggression, often in violation of the Constitution and international law, often attacking sovereign nations, and not in defense of liberty but to protect our economic and strategic interests abroad. America has transitioned from a republic to an imperialist war mongering nation.
The real tragedy is that the American military dead of the past 5 decades did not die in the defense of yours and my liberty. They were the expendable fodder of a military industrial complex that has turned our once great country into a war mongering killing machine. I think it's time to lay down your little flags and stop pretending our loved ones gave their lives for anything more than the financial gain of American imperialistic capitalism.

And Chick-fil-a chose, in their own way, to say "Thanks" to those who gave their lives. Let's leave it at that, and save the debate about the validity of those wars for another thread.

Don't always agree with Bodie, but I gotta agree with him on that. And "during my lifetime" covers a good bit of ground.

only the past 50 years??? here is an excerpt from a speech given in 1933 by marine corp general Smedley Butler:
http://fas.org/man/smedley.htm
Quote:
It may seem odd for me, a military man to adopt such a comparison. Truthfulness compels me to. I spent thirty- three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country's most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle- man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism.

Retire to Costa Rica. Their constitution has prohibited a standing military force since 1949. They seem to get along just fine without it. Nice place too.

Yes, GREAT military strategy, as long as you have someone else's military to rely upon... (Bold is mine, in case you skimmed over it... )
"Costa Rica maintains its military-free status and does not command any military units or house any war weapons. However, the country does maintain alliances with other countries, such as the United States, that can be expected assist in the event of war within Costa Rica."
