Basalt with mesh back for shower! Install advice!

We are doing a shower with a jet black basalt chevron with mesh back. I’ve read about sealing all sides before installing? And sealing again before grout? I’d love some advice! Topical versus penetrating, enhancing....I’m all confused!

Hi Ashley. Can you post a picture of the front and back of the tile? If I were to seal it I would do it after the tile is installed and grouted. That said, you should do a mock-up and do some samples with the two different sealers. One with a penetrating sealer and one with an enhancing sealer. The enhancing sealer will darken the basalt as well as the grout and show the end product.

I would like to see the back side to see how much of the tile is covered with the mesh and mesh glue. Are you planning to use this on the shower floor?

I've never sealed the back sides of tiles, it can only hurt the bond. I'm with Jerry, make a sample board so you'll know exactly how it'll turn out.

Thanks for the help- I can’t get photo to upload!

Hi- thanks for the advice. I’ll definitely do a mock up. The tile is black and I plan on using black grout. I want it dramatically dark. So sounds like enhancing is likely to be a good idea.
It’s going to be on walls and in shower...
I can’t get a photo to upload! It’s the chevron black basalt at floor and decor.
The back is mesh with about a 1 inch perimeter that’s not

Hi Ashley,

Pictures will and do upload, and they help tremendously.

Another piece of advice. Visualize having to wipe you tile off with a towel and how easily or difficult that might be.
