Stone Discoloration Help

We have a brown discoloration on the stone around our fire place as shown in the pictures below. We used a magic eraser (probably a bad idea) to get rid of it a few months ago but it has come back in the same spot. Any ideas on what is causing this and suggestions to properly clean it would be greatly appreciated as I do not want to make it worse. Thanks!

I'm not an expert on this, but my gut feeling is it may be rust discoloration, and the result of a water leak down the chimney.

Hey Stewart …
I’m with Jim … this looks like moisture coming down the chimney or chase .
Rust stains can be removed from stone but I would definitely find the culprit first .
