wow, looks like he used the cardboard to bring it out so he was able to get a full tile.

I had a person email me last week. there installer installed tile on the wall and was cutting strips of the cardboard box to install in a row he left out so the glass tile would be flush with the thicker wall tie.

ouch!

Matt - Wow! speechless....

Guessing he also framed the niche?

Brian - thats too funny - I had a guy several years ago I caught using cardboard to fill in low spots on a floor One corner of a room dove off about 2" in about 8 feet from the corner

When I asked "WTH are you doing?"

He said "Don't worry - once the cardboard sucks the portland outta the thin set it will be hard as a rock"

I said "You mean like the rocks in your head? - I want you to take all of that back up & redo it ....without the cardboard."

He said "I don't redo any of my work"

I said "Take your tools & git!"

Once I got it pulled up - not only did he have cardboard under there - in the deepest spot in the corner he had a 1x6 buried in thinset!

John,

you mean you never heard of a cardboard screed ?
you don't need to take them out, they just rot away and collapse

ok, not cardboard, but I have actually put a piece of 12 x 12 and immeadiately mortared over it, then set another piece on top of it, the floor was so bad! But cardboard only for walls- lol

sometimes people don't know what they're doing, and sometimes they don't care... this is a good example of both.

I looked at this one the other day, not the worst of the worst, but I got a chuckle, or two out of it.

I felt like the harbinger of bad news though. How do you all handle telling a potential customer just about everything their contractor/"tile guy" has done is wrong?

Yes, those are 2x4's screwed right through the Schluter tray.

And he has a nice bead of liquid nail "waterproofing" in the vertical corner.

1/2" Hardibacker put down with liquid nails.
