Thanks Jeremy, I was aware of the Noble Company and their products, but they are not readily available where I live....Plus my superior's only use Custom Products so if we did use a CIM, it would definitely be Redgard....

Custom makes other liquid crack membranes for just that....Semco & FractureFree.

have your superiors look into those products Customs make.

Hmmm, thanks for the info there ceramitec....I'm also aware of those as Custom is the only products used when I work with that crew... I use mostly Mapei when I do work on my own. Semco can be used for minor cracking, and FracturFree can only be used to bridge non-structural cracks...I believe a control joint would be considered a structural crack as they are saw-cut 1/3 the depth of the slab. If the control joint does not extend through the tile (meaning a grout joint is used and the joint is filled with backer-rod and then a silicone on top) then the installation is not up to industry standards and destined to fail.....Anyways, it's already tiled....

I wish I'd thought of this thread a few weeks ago. One of the showers I just finished was an abortion that someone else had installed, and done a terrible job. Imagine this-- the shower's 3 1/2'x7'x 9 1/2' high. Subway tiles on the walls, and a larger (2") river rock on the floor, curb, and right outside the shower. Doorway's all the way to the right, and it's a walkin, with an 8" return in the doorway. First, the doorway was trimmed in raw pine 1 by's, and tiled directly over with premixed thinset. The rest of the shower walls were also set with premixed thinset...... over 1/4" hardi (they told the contractor it was just as good, and half the weight). The tile was so out of wack, that there were places where one tile would be so far out from the one next to it that if it weren't grouted, you'd be able to see the back of the tile. The contractor had tried to save the river rock, even though all you could see were the very tips of the stone. It looked like rocks sticking out of the surface of a pond of grout. I told him no way, though, when I saw the Chloroloy stuck up only 1 INCH over the surface of the shower floor. It didn't even REACH the top of the curb. Good thing I did that, too. When we pulled the pan up, there were several places where this moron had punctured the Chloroloy, and then patched it with DUCT TAPE. Oh yeah-- one last thing-- they had a wood framed corner bench, covered in plywood and then 1/4" hardiboard. The guy told the contractor the hardi would protect the bench from the water.

I mean, it was BAD. Here it is, the second time around:







Edit-- One last thing-- the dry area of river rock-- that's all that was left from the original installation, and that was the BEST of it.

Actually, it didn't cost the homeowner a dime more. The GC, on the other hand, learned a valuable lesson. The last job I did for him was his own home, about 4 years ago. I believe he was rather upset with me because I was so "expensive".
