Had a nice chat with another pro on the job yesterday about all the crap work going on around here... and how the remodelers will have lots of work coming in the next few years......... sounds like it keeps you busy too.

Short answer, very carefully using maximum diplomacy. If needed, can provide a point by point list with code, manufacturers, industry standard references. They don't need to take my word for it, if they don't want to, but they usually do.

Actually, the home owner bought the Schluter tray, and had to twist the "tile guy's" arm to get him to install it incorrectly. He wanted to use a fiberglass/acrylic pan, because, he told her, the floor wasn't strong enough for a "concrete" pan that size.

Schluter has the best thing going with the Kerdi System, but I have a feeling they blew it when they started selling it to anyone who puts down some coin. I wish the only way you could purchase Kerdi products was if you were trained and licensed by Schluter. I agree that in the next 3 to 5 years there are going to be incredible repair and tear out work.

Yeah I agree, you shouldn't be able to buy it over the internet publicly. Now we have no edge.

Yeah, maybe they should stop selling thinset and tile at retail stores as well. We don't want them homeowners doing their own work now, do we?

Guys, let me remind you that 1) the John Bridge Forum is primarily a DIY help website, 2) the Pro's Hangout is not off-limits to the DIYers, and 3) for every well-executed DIY tile job, there's the possibility that another person will want one for him/herself, but will contract a pro to do it for them. The converse is also true for poorly executed tile jobs.

Just sayin'.
