I don't recommend rapid set for any DIYer. You got too many things to worry about without your thinset setting up in the bucket.

You can use any thinset you want to build up thickness, so long as the thinset your use to bond the glass is what the manufacturer recommends.

As for the build up, you can try this: get a plastic v-notch mastic spreader. Any size v-notch will do. Sand the notches so that they are about 1/8" deep. Burn-in some thinset and comb out with the modified mastic spreader. Let the thinset cure, then skim coat some more thinset to just fill the grooves. Let this cure, the set your glass tiles as usual. This will take some time to do, but the modified spreader will make you some uniform screeds to help get a level base for your glass.

Thanks Bob, Good idea on the thinset build up with v notch. I guess I will get the regular 254 laticrete insted of the 254R. Since Oceanside specifies it. May need some time to adjust glass spacing and don't want to worry about it setting up to quick.

So using two different thinset's over each other won't be a problem? 254 over 317..

Nope. You'll let one cure before you cover it with the other.

Bathroom progress and questions

Finally got some tile on the walls, glass border, niche, and shelves finished. Just need to finish up last row of tile then on to grout.

Have a few questions on grout. Would like to use the laticrete spectralock on pebbles. Oceanside glass doesn't recomend a epoxy grout. Should I just use spectralock on pebble and use the 1500 sanded on walls and glass?

Also I used the laticrete 254 platinum for glass and that stuff rocks. Should I use it to set pebble or stick with the 317 laticrete. Not worried about schluter warranty, since I already broke the rules setting glass using it.

Thanks bbcamp for the help with setting glass. Worked out great.

Thanks again,

Dan

PS- How can I get pictures larger without going over the 50kb?

Hello Dan,
If you go with the 245 allow extra time for cure. I think they sell 1500 sanded inna small box. If you do wanna use Spectralock, get a box for the glass and use the epoxy everywhere else. I really don't think it'd matter too much, but if you are concerned with Oceanside's recommendation...? Epoxy first, then 1500. Here's a link explainin' the pic thang.

Thanks Brad,

Need another opinion. I guess the ceiling drywall wasn't plumb so I have a gap at the top where the tiles end. Should I do a "Skinny" and try to blend it or leave it?

I should of ended it after the shower head but already put up the kerdi and did all my drywall tape and mud. oh well...

Due to different reasons, I have run bullnose around the top tucked into the space you have there. It's a bit hard to tell, but would that take care of it, that is IF you can get more bull?

Maybe go back to the tile store and look for some chair rail to wrap around the top, using it like a molding. Something in a tumbled marble or travertine might coordinate well with that tile. Bring your checkbook.

I should have some scrap bull nose after I'm done but I wasn't happy the way it looks. It's a glased porcelain 3x13.

My original plan was to do a v cap up top to finish it off but the price and wife changed my mine. It was $12.00 for a 2x13 v cap and that's with 20% off too. Maybe I shouldnt of listend to the wife and just gone for it.

I actually looked for a natural stone molding but didn't find any that looked good with my tile.

I'll ponder on it for a while and see what looks best.

Thanks,

Actually it's hard to tell from the picture but the left wall tile is just about flush with the ceiling, the right wall has the biggest gap at ceiling and tapers smaller on the back wall to the left. What are the rules on skinny's?

Thanks Brad on the comment. For a first time tile job I'm happy with the results other then a few mistakes.

Dan,
Skinny's might highlight the mistake rather than hide it. I'd probably go with grout before that.

Finished Pebble and Floor..

Just finished all my tile work. Pebble installed, grouted and sealed. All I have left is to texture and paint walls, install vanity & mirror and toilet. Finally almost finished.
