Replace shower floor tile

I moved into a new home (not brand new) 6 months ago. I noticed crackes in the grout of the shower floor. I was just going to repair the noticeable grout cracks, but after further inspection, there were more cracks that were covered with caulk.
I think it would be better to replace the tile on the shower floor, but I am not sure exactly what I am getting into since I have never done it before. The shower is on the second floor. I would assume that there is a floor pan beneath the tile, but I am not sure.
Has anyone replaced a tile floor in the shower? Can you provide some insight/advice for a first timer? Thanks.

i would recommend a total tear out and redo properly. i would never recommend a repair in showers. there is just no way to warrenty it.

Problem is, we dunno neither.

While it could be as simple as a bonding problem with the floor tiles, there's no way for any of us to know until one of us tears out the floor tiles, eh? And since you're the onliest one there, best I can tell, looks like you're fixin' to be nominated to find out for us.

What Jeff is tellin' you is that if he came to look at your shower and you wanted it repaired, there's no way he would contract to do that. Too many variables, too much at stake.

But it's your house and your shower and you can just tear stuff out 'till you determine the problem, hope you've not caused any more problem, and repair it to your satisfaction.

My opinion; worth price charged.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, its impossible to tell the damage until I pull the tile. I am wondering if there is supposed to be a shower pan under the tile. If there is, I won't have any problem. If it is a gamle if a shower pan underneath, it concerns me because of the damage that is probably there. However, your point is well taken. I am the only one who can find out. I will warranty my work though

There is supposed to be a liner under your shower floor. If you are not having leaks, the liner is doing its job. If you are thinking of simply removing the tile and what ever's below it and still save the liner, then you must go slow and easy. Trouble is, though, you may find that the problem is beneath the liner, since cracked grout is a movement problem, and movement problems are usually structural. Still, your efforts will not be wasted if you find the problem deeper than the liner. Demo is demo.

Got it, "supposed" to be a liner. I am not showing any leaking, so I am pretty sure its there. I am going to attempt. Thanks for all the responses.
