HELP! Wicking backer board

Unfortunately my dumb tile guy used hardie backer in my steam shower. He placed it down in the pan unprotected (waterproofed) the stuff above the pan he waterproofed. BUT the Hardie company said he should never have used it in a steam shower . I know the floor pan and a couple of rows of tile up from the floor (in front of vapor barrier) will need to be removed. But other than mold, etc. forming behind the tiles does anybody know what would happen if nothing was done? I mean would the tiles fall off? The backer board is only wet behind the vapor barrier.

Susie, I split your post off into a thread of it's own. You'll get more attention this way.
