Private Toll Road Fines Cancer Patient $43,000

A family that took their cancerous daughter to hospitals for four months saw a $465 fine balloon to $43,000. Apparently because it is a privately owned toll road, they can set any fine they want, and it doesn't have to be reasonable or be subject to any scruntiny.

I know the Libertarian have a love affair with private roads, and this is one example why they are not for everyone--no oversight.

Scooter, how is this a privately owned road? it certainly sounds like a public agency.

It was sold to a private operator, or somehow franchised. We have a couple of those types of quasi-private freeways out here.

All of the new toll roads being built around austin are built and run by private companies. Odd, but one of them that spits out near my place has like 4 traffic lights with cross traffic. I always thought the concept behind the toll road was limited access, no stops. Personally, I refuse to drive them, but I hear from neighbors that the traffic jams on this particular road are awful

Like paying to drive on a regular steet, which I suppose is coming.

Maybe we should start a list of things that can happen to you in life that exempt you from following the rules of our society. Maybe I can save a few bucks myself.

This type of situation happens all the time, people being irresponsible and then making excuses when it comes time to pay the piper.

Just like the guy who testified to congress a few weeks back that knowingly went over his credit limit and then got whacked with fines. What did he expect?

Read the rules, follow the rules, or don't use the service.....

I agree with the redneck. Although, the fines do seem to be a little outrageous.

Living in So-Cal myself, you drive on the toll-road you pay, bottom line.
