My last bath remodel....for now at least

Posted awhile back about the high gas prices and how someone had contacted me about going back to my previous life, a looking for the bubblin goo, crude oil, texas tea..........isn't that how the song went. Well, I took the job, will finish my long drawn out remodel on WED., pack up the tools, store it all for a time, move to BEVERLY......Well not quite, but I did notify my customers on my list that If they wanted to wait 6 weeks, would be taking some jobs after. So, I accepted the job from the mysterious CALI company and it's not working offshore CALI like I thought. Jumping on a plane for Norway on Monday, sea trials in the North Sea, and then on to BRAZIL. I hate to be throwin in the towel, but I am planning on continuing the tile trade on my off time (6 weeks on, 6 weeks off) but on a much smaller scale. I think the cost of fuel, insurance, workers comp, materials, and raising a family has got me looking for that guaranteed money every month. I will be checkin in, these luxury boats got e-mail, internet, all the good stuff. Send you all a greeting from my voyages. Good luck to all, speak to you guys soon..........chris

Good luck, Chris.

Sounds like an interesting gig. Send along some details when you find out what the hell you're doing, eh?

Me, when I get tard of buildin' stuff, I go count owls for a few months. Don't likely pay as well as all drillin', but the change of pace always does me good.

home again, another bathroom almost finished

well got home from West Africa, trying to catch up on reading here on the site. Spent six weeks off the coast of Africa and quite a bit of time in the Canary Islands. No place like home. So I actually got home 5 weeks ago, jumped into a bath remodel i had promised a while back. Thank god for tile amateurs, the tear out was so easy. They used mastic over green board, love it when they do it that way. (if it hasn't damaged the studs that is) The tear out is so easy when it is done wrong...LOL....... it just falls off the wall. Anyways, of course I mudded, new mud bed, all the good stuff. Like a dummy i had moved the drain (was way off center before) and didn't test drainage before leak test. Turns out it barely drains. Oh well, will probably have to go under the house and check pipes closer. Maybe it is just obstructed. It is ABS so might get lucky. This house has got so many bones from critters under it, i seem to be skittish. (must of read to many Steven King books at sea) So to sum it up, will finish on Tuesday, then leave in another week for Nigeria. (oh boy) Will update again when i get back. Hope all your holidays were good, talk to you guys soon. (damn, just home long enough to go back with sore knees and cracked hands, little mortar around the fingernails, etc.)

just out of curiosity?

How many shots did you have to get prefacing this grand adventure?

Other than that your new job sounds fascinating.

Good luck and be safe

i think i had around 12. got them a few months back, all in one shot. had a heck of a time tiling for a few days. as for my drain problem, no pet semetary, was able to drop in one of those hose bladder things on the end of a water hose, opened her right up. did have to look around to make sure the homeowner wasn't watching, don't want to come off like it was that easy. well anyways, off to Nigeria on monday. you should see the way we are brought in. they meet us with a bunch of MOPO's (mobile police, kinda Gestapo types) and soldiers. then we are convoyed through the city in armored vans with escorts. Not even allowed to go to the bathroom without a couple of armed guards. (that is if you don't have to bribe the customs guy to get your passport back, we are issued two just in case) Nice place for a vacation. Could be worse, could be one of our guys in Iraq or Afghanistan. Just being in a dangerous country like Nigeria gives me even more respect for our military.
