Tiling fireplace

I am going to tile a fireplace with talavera tile. Currently there is a brick frame around the opening, and the rest of the fireplace is covered in All Purpose joint compound. This is my first time tiling and I would love some advice:
What is the best adhesive to use? I've been told to use thinset, but I notice there are different varieties. Can I use the same adhesive on the brick and the joint compound? Do I need to rough up the surface of the JC, or do I need to first top the JC with something else before I can put adhesive on it?

Thank you in advance for your help.

With that clay tile you can use a regular premium thinset, i like to flat trowel thinset the day before to flatten and straighten things and give me a good surface to tile on.
