Bad news indeed, Jim.
So sorry to hear, my heart and prayers go out to all those affected.
Careful..... THIS may be a bit graphic.

I'm curious to know where an Aussie got an AR-15 in New Zealand.
Anyway, it's a horrible thing. I'm very sorry to hear of it.

John even though we have strict gun laws here once you have a gun licence you can pretty much buy what you want (within reason There are several steps that you have to go through but this guy was a "normal" bloke) , the gun shops are full of them.. https://www.guncity.com/ Turns out the guy lives in my city and was going to attack a Mosque here but decided to commit his terrible crime in Christchurch, He went to the same gym i go to and i have seen him most days that i have been there, nothing about him screamed mass murderer. Unfortunatly as far as punishment goes the most he will get here is life in prison, which usually means 20 years and may only serve half that if you are well behaved. I dont know if he will get to serve the rest of his life behind bars but this guy deserves the death penalty

He would be a dead man here. That's for sure. (If they didn't decide he was insane.)

Probably doesn't have much to do with anything but......
anyone notice the prices of those firearms shown in the link that Jim posted?

Those dollars are only worth 69 cents here, though, for comparison.
You notice how many are available with silencers installed, Dave.

Yes, I did notice the silencers, Kelly.
It seemed to me that either NZ takes hearing health more seriously than the US or that they have special requirements for certain arms used in certain ways.
I was not aware of a 69/100 ratio in the value of dollars twixt NZ and US but even so.... the price of NZ arms to me is still rather amazingly high.

everything cost way more here, partly because of the costs of getting it here and also the economy of scale, less sold costs higher

the inevitable is now happening regarding tightening up gun laws and the government talking about banning semi autos and a compulsory buy back of existing gun owners semi autos, the end result will be the good guys give up their guns and the bad guys keep their illegal ones
