I've seen this same scenario a couple of times around here.

The landing at bottom of the stairs certainly sustains regular impacts and if any part of the deflection/bonding chain is the least bit compromised, it seems to me it could result in failure.

I've never had the opportunity to check this theory, but have wondered if some joist blocking in the "landing pad" area wouldn't be a good idea regardless of deflection numbers being adequate.

My research stems back to when I was a kid bounding down stairs 2 or 3 at a time. Admittedly non-scientific, but they would be significant dynamic loads....hmmm.

Dunno that it adds anything to the conversation, but felt like typing, I guess.
