Drain question

My wife wants me to redo our upstairs bath and put in something like this. Currently has an outdated tub/shower combo. I can't figure out how they handled the drain situation since there is going to be overspray onto the floor which will need to be drained along with the tub.

what would be the best base for all that weight of the tub and water without cracking the tile underneath.

Thanks in advance...

David

Welcome, David.

Those things are pretty, but does Mrs. David recognize the cleaning difficulties associated with such an arrangement?

I'm guessing that tub has a center drain? If so, my solution would be to make a waterproof shower, just as though the tub were not gonna be in there, situate a 2-inch drain where the tub drain, presumed to be 1 1/2-inch, will be, and simply let the tub drain into the shower drain.

If you have a suitable subfloor, making a proper sloped mortar bed, either a traditional mud/liner/mud type, or a single mortar bed with a direct bonded waterproofing membrane should handle the weight. No idea what the footprint of that tub might be, but if your tiles, preferably porcelain, have near 100 percent coverage with the bonding mortar, they should do fine.

My opinion; worth price charged.

These tub/shower things look really cool in design magazines. They are in the houses of rich people who hire people to clean and when they can't get it clean they remodel to the next fad.

Maybe ask the designer?

We'd love to help you build a great walk-in shower OR a tub with a shower. Not sure if I can help with this. Maybe someone here had done one and can share.

Yep, a cleaning nightmare is what it is. I wouldn't want it.

That's a hard nope, to me. Aside from the drain challenge, that set up would be clean exactly once.

If you were to take away the shower head and hand wand, it would stay much cleaner but all your guests wouldn't want to take baths.

Red face

So make it a bathtub, but not inside a shower that doesn't have a drain? Crazy.
