Can I use thinset over drywall in non-wet area

I will be laying tile on a bathroom wall (behind sink and toilet). Drywall is there now, have just stripped off wallpaper. Some of the wall may have sizing on it, some has the paper torn a bit. Can I set the tile directly to the drywall with thinset? (12" inch ceramic tile.)

Also, around my tub surround, on the two end walls, 30" of tile will run horizontally over hardibacker, in the wet area. That means two and a half 12" tiles on hardibacker. The remaining 6 inches of a 12" tile will overlap onto drywall outside of the bath. Can I set with thinset in this situation, with thinset on drywall where the tile overlaps?

Will I be able to keep my layer of thinset thin enough to just caulk the edges? Using floor tile, so there is no bullnose, and I am working to an outside corner.
