the wider trowel lets you spread a nice smooth flat line.
no humps, swirls or high spots to mess with your setting a flat tile.
and when you notch out your only taking a little off the edges, enough
for the thinset to press back into the void as you set it and not come
up through your grout joints.
I do marble the same way so I dont get squeeze out.

Donnie,
your guy was putting down big plops of thinset and setting the tile on them.
I would think you would have more voids from those globs.
that's a lot of thinset for under those planks to ooze up into the grout joints
your better off spreading a nice smooth flat line, cutting out the edges,
back buttering and then setting the plank.

yeah, floating or flashing the floor flat or using an SLC will save you time and headache when setting.

I worked with a guy who asked me why I did that with the margin trowel around the perimeter of the tile, it helps from the oozing.

I do the same, for the same reasons. And if any does ooze out i run my margin trowel through the grout line and clean it out. Id like to tell you that i then clean the tile with a sponge rather than my finger and then my pant leg, but that would make a liar out of me
I ruin a pair of jeans/job, its a bad filthy habit, but im working on it

Brian and Rick- How is the coverage on the corners when you lift a tile to check coverage?

you are only cutting a small groove against the tile ahead of you
with the corner of your margin trowel. not a deep wide valley.
and in reality its not taking thinset out, its really plowing it off the tile edge and moving it out of the way. when the tile is set the thinset pushed back in the void.
I also do the when using the TLS so I dint get squeeze up under the caps.
