Need help! Water rings on white carrara marble top!!!

Hello fellow forum members!

This is my first time posting though I have browsed this forum many times as we have been through our renovation. I think this is a fantastic forum and have learned much about marble that I will surely put to good use in future projects.

Now, I have a very specific problem that I am hoping that you all can help me with. I have a new white Carrara marble top coffee table that now has some water rings on it.

Here is a picture of the table:

We had some people over and some of them did not use coasters for their drinks. Some glasses were left on the table overnight and it's formed some rings on the marble top. I am trying to remove these but have not had any luck so far. I have the Tile Your World Neutral Tile and Stone Cleaner and am now leaving it on the stains for half an hour to see if it will help.

Any advice to help me get these stains out would be appreciated! Thank you all in advance.

Hi Tina

When you lightly brush your fingertip over the mark, does it feel as smooth as the rest of the top? Are the rings lighter in color? These rings are typically etch marks, and no amount of cleaning will remove them. They will need to be polished out. Maurizio Bertoli has a good polishing powder and he can walk you through it.

Hi Tim,

Yes, it definitely feels as smooth as the rest of the top, and the rings are slightly lighter in color. Just to clarify, the marble top is a matte finish, not polished at all. If I use the polishing powder, will I have to polish the whole top?

Oh…I thought it was polished…for some reason.

Either way, those are etch marks. I don’t know if Maurizio has a honing powder or not. He’ll be around after a while, I’m sure.

It’s a little easier to blend areas with the rest when honing, rather than polishing. More than likely you will end up doing the whole top, though. We don’t know what level of hone you have. Not a big deal at all, at least we’re not talking about a few thousand feet of floor, eh?

I feel obligated to tell you some alternatives. If you mess this up, you can use a honing powder to fix it, so you’re not out any.

1.You can use sandpaper. Try around a 400 grit, or so, then go from there.

2.You can try to wash the top with white vinegar and water mixed 50/50. This will etch the whole top.

No matter what you do, I recommend sealing with TYW Stone Armor after you achieve the finish you like, as long as it’s not a polish. Armor will give you a little more time to clean up etching materials, but it will not hold acids out indefinitely.

Thanks for the additional advice. I actually don't have a hone, but if it's an easy enough do-it-yourself project, I'll go pick up whatever I need at Home Depot and do the job.
