Subfloor & Joist Construction

I am planning on constructing a 14' x 8' ceramic tile platform atop a cement slab floor. 2" x 10" joists, 16" OC with 1 1/2" external grade plywood make up the subflooring . The subfloor will be covered with backer board prior to installation of 17" x 17" ceramic tile. The ceramic tile platform will be used for a travertine dining table. The table has a 24" by 14" rectangular base. It's total weight is about 120 lbs. My question is whether there should be additional cross bracing between the joists under the location of the dining table.

Hi scan......

Have a first name we may use?

If I picture what you describe correctly..... it all sounds quite sturdy.

2" x 10" joists on 16" centers all set directly on a cement floor.

Then 1 1/2" of subfloor atop these joists.

Yep.... sounds sturdy.

With all that sturdy-ness already.... why not just go ahead and set some additional blocking under that 120 dead weight + load weight table.

Can't hurt and... the base support for that table is going to be less than 16" in one direction (less than joist DOC) and at 24" in the other direction is less than two joist DOC's.

Welcome, Ron.

If you go to the UserCP above, find Edit Signature and enter you first name it'll appear in each post.

I wouldn't worry for even a microsecond about that table's footprint on your tile floor. It will be absolutely insignificant in comparison to the footprint of the chair of even the smallest of your dinner guests.

My opinion; worth price charged.
