Newbie needing advice on granite tiles

DH and I are planning on installing granite tiles to our countertop. Our countertop now is a hideous shade of pink and were custom made!! (Why anyone would choose mauve countertops and pay the extra price is beyond me). The price to have laminate tops installed (again custom) is more than I want to spend. Our tops are laminate with particle board underneath. They are in good shape and sturdy but I've read that we should take them out and put down plywood instead. Is this correct?

Also, we have found two tiles that we like (Giallo Napoleone or Giallo Veneziano) and the home improvement store in town can order tiles for us-I believe they are very similar to the two types mentioned. The cost is almost $13 per tile and we need approx. 50 sq ft. Are there any tile places online that you would recommend or should we stick with the mega home store? We're trying to save money but I don't want to skimp too much and get tiles from an online dealer and not be happy with the final product. I would assume the s/h fees would be quite high too.

Thanks for all the advice!!

Hi dRichards, welcome. Do you have a first name we can go by? Yes you want to pull out the old countertops and replace it with 3/4" ac ply, then cbu. I think if you check around the price isn't to far off of what you are looking at. usually granite runs anywhere from 10 to 15 a piece

Thanks Mike!

My name is Daphne. I figured it would just be easier to buy the tiles from the large chain but I'm always wanting to get the best deal. Plus I always like a second opinion
