Welcome to forum, Mike or Shelby.

One problem with your suggestion, Mike. Your method is not recommended by the manufacturer. We try our best to offer advice that meets manufacturer recommendations or conforms to industry standards. I have my doubts whether the high temp silicone could withstand the weight of the stone without the benefit of mechanical fasteners.
If that doesn't work, I'll always think it should have.

Sorry I haven't gotten a picture up. The framing around the fireplace is way out of plumb in a couple of places, so I'm going to remove one piece of drywall and try to get all the framing in (close to) a single plane. If I can, then my drywall and the steel fireplace front will be within 1/16" of the same vertical plane.

An adhesive alternative?

I had the same interest; Google found Cotronics' new product page which mentions a bunch of high temperature adhesives (up to 3000F). Sauereisen has a line of similarly high temp adhesives that will bond ceramic to metal.

I don't know about expansion rates, but heat weakening seems to be well handled.
