Tiling over expansion joints in cement

I have a customer that wants me to install cement pavers or porcelin tile on top of textured cement around her pool and back patio. What do you recommend for going over the expansion joints (many).

Regards,

Ron Ostlund

my advice to you is to mark your expansion joints then install your pavers or tiles and saw-cut right where your marks are it may look ugly but it works. there might be other ideas out there so good-luck

Ron, If it's possible start the layout on the longest expansion joint but make sure you have a grout joint over every one or it will eventually crack the tiles. Use silicone in these joints.

Thats how Ive done it in the past on walkways, however, there are so many around the pool i was hoping a crack isolation membrane or something would suffice. What do you think about that?

You can't tile over an expansion joint, even with a membrane.
