Brian-- looking to get about 10 yards of 1 1/2" gravel delivered next week.

Adam's wife drives a little Olds Alero, and it nearly gets lost in the ruts!

Well actually I was talking about just clipping the point straight off. so the grout joint is smaller where it abuts the wall tile.

where it returns down I actually back cut the piece of wall tile so it tucks back in there nice.

these I actually cut the shelf square back to the wall.

not sure what you mean

See how that last pic you posted returned back to the wall. im talking about the same shape but only a small cut off the end. so the point is the same thickness of the wall tile.

see how it meets up with the tile height?

I know you have probably done it this way just a communication issue

yeah I see what you mean. mine comes out the same way.
what I was trying to say is I cut the back of the tile out where the point runs into the wall tile so it makes a small joint, pretty much the same if I were to cut the tip off of the shelf.

JC, you can see it back cut better here.

if you dont back cut it or clip the corner yeah you get a huge ugly joint there
where the angle of the shelf drops and touches the back part of the tile.

I have always been leery of single layer stone tile corner shelves, though I have installed a number of them over the years. How do you all feel about them?

Not a big fan of em, either. All it takes is one fault unseen in the stone. Just a bit too thin for me.

Yeah, but a good mechanic can figure out how to replace them.

A good mechanic might also rather use something stronger, like 2 cm stone, so they don't HAVE to be replaced.

I agree a pc of slab is the way to go. Here is another option. I know a lot of guys do this, I sure didn't invent it.

Cut a pc in tile in half diagonally, flip it so the veins match, akemi it together and shape and polish. A little stronger for those Costco size shampoo bottles.

I also like the notch idea. I started doing that makes it easier to get a nice cut around the shelf. I didn't do that on this picture and you can see the joint is a little big at the corners of the shelf where they hit the wall tile.

This is from the tub surround in my house.

While on the subject of places for shampoo and such, what about niches?Should they 'disappear' into the layout or be a focal point? I always try to get them to land in full tile when possible so that they disappear. I put this one off center so that it is not in the direct stream of the shower head. (But it is waterproofed).

But I have seen some niches look really nice as a focal point too.

Around my way you can get shelves in about 6 different colors and they are thicker like 3/4". I prefer them. They retail for 45 bucks.
