This was a difficult installation a couple of weeks ago. The customer wanted to clad his range hood duct in Laminam 3.5mm panels and trimmed out with stainless steel 4.5mm Schluter profiles. The range hood hangs from a vaulted ceiling; the panels are about 7 ft long.
I'd never worked with these thin tile panels before and don't have scoring tools to score and snap them. Also, the two 40" x 120" panels he bought were $300 each. Using a 7" glass tile blade (Montolit CPV) in a Skilsaw with Kerdi membrane fitted onto the base plate and spraying it with a weed sprayer worked well. Used an aluminum screed rail clamped onto the table and the panel.
Not sure I want to work with this stuff again. It's so fragile. Turned out nice though.

looks sweet. Having a 100 grit dry polishing pad on a variable speed grinder helps me clean up edges on jobs like that.

People are telling me that these Thin Tile Panels are going to be in demand soon for bathroom walls. I don't want to be part of that new wave. I'd have to buy $3000 to $6000 worth of tools (rail cutters, framework with suction cups, corner protectors, tables) and need a helper and a bigger truck.

Not ready for all of that.

Nicely done, Ron . Another good looking design / application for the thin tiles .
If needed , there are metal trims for 45 degree angles from Profilitec which give a symmetrical look .

I don't see the problem. Every builder I've ever worked for says that the larger the tiles are, the easier and faster they are to install so the price for labor should be cheaper.
Great looking job.

Spent too long installing this 12x24 granite kitchen floor. The job started out with a 254 failure as the thinset would flash over in a few minutes. Switched to 4XLT and had no problems.
During the install we found several of the tiles would cup at random. Sometimes we could bend the tiles back into shape using thinset and TLS.
Since the HO wants to use a sealer on the granite before grouting, we'll have to wait a few weeks for it to dry. The stone sucked up a huge amount of water from the thinset.
Normally the stone is a much whiter color. You can tell where we finished each day by the darkness of the tiles.

Looks great, Paul. Yeah, I had that problem with dark brown marble. Scary because it took days to look all uniform.

Little bath I started working on. Different... for me anyway. Kind of excited to see how it turns out in the end.

Paul: gorgeous work, but are you sure it's granite? Sure looks like marble to me (which would fit with it soaking up water).

That pic looks familiar, Justin. Looks great!
That granite looks great, Paul. I can't remember the last time I put granite on a floor. Seems like it's just not a popular look these days, at least in my neck of the woods.
Has anyone heard much buzz from the slab shops about jumping on the porcelain panel bandwagon? Seems like they're already set up for that better than the average tile guy. They can have it as far as I'm concerned! I agree that it's way more headache than I want to get in to. No thanks.... Looks great though.

Petr, The customer, whom I trust, said its granite. It looks like granite. Sure is heavy.
Justin, that is so cool. Be sure to post final pics.
