Carpet cleaning gurus?

Are there any decent residential carpet cleaning machines out there? Or is that wishful thinking? I’ve only ever used ~$200 machines that don’t survive longer than 5 years of light use l. And after using blasé box store cleaning agents, a commercial supplier’s recommended cleaning agent was no better. Any advice?

I've rented "Rug Doctor" machines, typically available at grocery stores 'round there parts, Bubba, and used their cleaning chemicals too. They do an ok job but may require more than one pass if the carpet is really dirty.

Sometimes I wonder what horrors those rented Rug Doctors have seen.

Anyone else have a good experience with a cleaning machine?
