Need some help on my tiling projects!

I have two bathroom tiling projects coming up at my house, and there is so much information out there it can get confusing at times, so I just want to make sure that I’m doing everything right the first time! For my master bathroom shower I purchased some 4 x 4 tumbled marble tiles and for my guest tub/shower I bought some 4 x 6 ceramic subway tiles. Here is what I’ve done so far:

Hung Durock cement backerboard up smooth side out, over 6 mil plastic sheeting, in both bathrooms.

Questions I have so far:

1. Do I use thin set mortar or an adhesive to hang the tumbled marble? If thin set…do I need to turn backerboard around and hang it rough side out or does it matter?

2. Do I use the same steps for the ceramic tiles?

Use a modified thinset to set both types of tile. No need to re-hang the backerboard.
