This is what we started yesterday in Temecula here. Existing fireplace was brick veneer and a brick hearth. That got tore out and we did marble on the hearth and the 3 ledges on the right. The rest of the wall got cement board and then we started the veneer. Decided this was the perfect time to try the MVIS from Laticrete.

Chad- how is that MVIS mortar to work with? Feel more like thinset or masonry mix?

Did you have to use a ledger board or did it hold the stone good without?

And one more. How much a bag where your at?

thanks

Hey Issac ,

Definitely feels like a nice thinset. I like the feel of it and am confident in the adhering power.

Second I mixed to bag specs and still couldn't get it to not sag so I used a ledger . Probably would have anyway since the fireplace is 13 feet tall and that's a lot of vertical weight at once.

And last I have no idea the cost. I tried to get some from my local store and they didn't have it yet. So I called one of Henry's Laticrete reps for around here and he gave me a couple bags from the plant near me to try.

To be honest I'm not to worried about the non-sag part. I'm sure for brick veneer it will work fine. But some of these panels are 4" x 20" probably 10+ pounds that's a bit to hold up.

Ok so what is this stuff really?

I don't see why you could not just use thinset for that job but I suspect that mortar is made for other applications.

Is it for use over lath? Is it a non-modified for outdoor use? What is this stuff and why would we need it?

You might not need it but I think the selling factor is the warranty that using the system provides. How many shopping plaza's have seen the rock falling off at ? This stuff provides a great bond. Yes thinset would work but this is part of the MVIS so i used it.

Finished this up today Mantel comes in next week.

Looks nice finished.

Just don't forget to use a grout release before grouting.
