Using Cement Backerboard for Shower Pan?

Hi all,

I spoke with another tile contractor today who says he recommends building shower pans out of cement backerboard. He described setting it with thinset and using shims to achieve the proper slope. Then waterproofing the assembly with Kerdi.

The person seemed quite knowledgeable and experienced, but I've never heard of this before and can't find any similar descriptions on this forum or Google.

I wanted to check if anyone has heard/tried this method and could give an opinion on it.

I must say it's been harding finding anyone who does traditional mud shower pans in my area.

He's making up processes on his own that are not approved or recommended by any of the manufacturers.

What they said. And some manufacturers come right out and specifically say that it’s not approved for such.

Yep...Keep looking.

Tim, if ya add your geographic location to your user profile perhaps a real tile setter from your area will reach out.
