Sagulator question

I've always assumed the Optional Edging Strip referred to the front edge of the shelf only. Does anyone know if this is correct? If so, I'm wondering how the calculation would change if edge strips are added to both front and rear shelf edges. I'm inclined to just double the edging strip thickness in Sagulator to get an approximation. Make sense?

Interesting. I'll hafta bookmark that with my other calculators.

On shelving, of which I've done a good deal, I've always had to guess, for the most part. Might overkill some of them, but don't recall any failures.

To your question. I dunno. I first read it and considered that the back of the shelf would be fully supported because that's just the way I've always done mine. But their note #7 indicating the calculator could be used for beam deflection would seem to put the lie to that.

If the calculator considers the shelf to be completely unsupported, I would presume that doubling the edge strip thickness would be the same as adding a strip to both edges.

Except, I think, that the back of the shelf would sag more than the front.

We were talking about the calculation, John, not the actual construction of the shelf.

That right there is what I've always done, was just curious if there might be an engineering type lurking that would actually have done the calculations.

Thanks gents
