I figured out why all the lumber yards are sold out of gopher wood. I looked out this morning and a rather large and ancient looking watercraft came floating down my street. All the cats and dogs in the neighborhood were aboard, and there was this really old looking dude with a beard down to his chest at the tiller.

I ran out and asked him if he had room for a few more people and a couple small birds. Said he'd take the birds but that he had his quota of humans.

Folks, this doesn't sound good, does it?

Maybe someone should pull the plug and let the water out. I feel for you. I was griping this evening 'cause I had to walk to my truck and got my hair wet. Been watchin' the weather, you are drenched to be sure.

Freezing Rain

Remindes me of the time I sent two patrol cars to take care of an accident on I-96 near US-23. The crash blocked the roadway so traffic had to stop. The Troopers radioed in that it was so slippery from the freezing rain, that the stopped tractor-trailer rigs were sliding sideways off the crown or the road.

Now that's slippery... One of those times I realized how good it was to be a supervisor.

JT, I've seen more of that kinda ice on the roads in Dallas/Ft.Worth, Texas than anyplace I've ever lived or visited. Nothin' quite like it for an automotive thrill! 'Specially with a dusting of snow on top.

Warmed up to 50 today, and they're promising more of the same for the rest of the week, and maybe even some sunshine!! We'll see. John, you didn't go & get yourself drowned on us did ya.

The clouds parted about mid-morning, this this huge fire ball in the sky began to dry things out. It was a glorious day. About 70. But they say the rain will return toward the end of the week.

CX: I'm sure that what you saw was slippery.

Though arround here when you have a dusting of snow, we consider that added traction.


What I'm talking about is when the temp is hovering just below freezing. The rain is just about to freeze when it hits the cold ground. What you end up with is 1/4 to 1/2 inch of clear ice all over everything and then 1/8 to 1/4 inch of water on top of the ice.

It does seem we get more than our share of ice 'round here, huh? If it would only snow, it wouldn't be so bad. Beautiful autumn weather here, mid 60's bright sun. Miss the fall colours, tho'. Hoping to get out of town real soon.

Nope, no confusion, JT, that's the stuff. And we'd get different variations of it, too. The dusting of snow was after we already got the half inch of clear ice and it got down into the teens. Real dry stuff. Provides excellent lubrication. Lemme tell ya about the time at 03:00 New Years Day when I had the entire D/FW turnpike to myownself in exactly those conditions, going about 60mph, perfectly straight highway, my truck turned 90 degrees to the road just by the wind on the canvas cover on the back, and the "tunnel" (loooong underpass under the old airport runways) with its dry pavement dead ahead. Ah, the good ol' days.

That place gets weird weather. Only place I have ever seen ice fog at 13 degrees while the wind was blowing 10 knots. Can't happen, but we had it once. And there were times when the hail was mixed with rain when it was cold enough to freeze the rain and make it look like acoustic ceiling texture on everything, vertical surfaces, too, if the wind was right.

I've lived in the north country and spent plenty time in the western mountains, but for just plain strange winter weather, Fort Worth was the winner. And in the summer it would sometimes rain mud when Lubbock would blow over to Dallas whilst it was raining.

But people still live there. Hell, it never lasts but a few days, no matter what it is.
